Jean-Paul SARTRE est né le 21 juin 1905 à Paris. Il est issu d’un milieu bourgeois et cultivé. Il fait ses études à Paris. En 1924, Sartre intègre l’École Normale Supérieure et obtient son agrégation de philosophie en 1929.
En 1938, il publie La Nausée, roman reçu favorablement par la critique.
En 1939, Sartre est mobilisé et, en juin 1940, il est fait prisonnier. Libéré un peu plus tard, il se tourne vers le théâtre pour exprimer son engagement : il publie Les Mouches et, en 1943, L’Être et le Néant.
À la libération, il fonde la revue Les Temps Modernes et quitte l’enseignement. Sa théorie de l’existentialisme connaît un véritable succès. Il considère qu’un intellectuel doit être un homme d’action et que l’engagement est nécessaire.
En 1964, il refuse le Prix Nobel de Littérature.
Sartre participe aux événements de mai 1968 et soutient la révolte étudiante.
